1. The Megan Mullally Show (2006-2007)
Megan Mullally used to be humorous. It is obvious that she would be able to carry a daytime talk show with ease. But “The Megan Mullally Show” ended in 2006 with a whimper rather than a bang.
Mullaly appeared on the show in her real-life persona. And that of her most well-known role—that of Karen Walker from “Will and Grace”—on its inaugural episode for syndication. In its early seasons, the show included some of her co-stars in an effort to establish a connection with its viewers.
But it didn’t work, and “The Megan Mullally Show” quickly saw low ratings. Soon later, it was canceled before it could even complete its first season.
2. The Martin Short Show(1999–2000)
The Martin Short Show, an unsuccessful effort at a chat show that Short made in 1999, served as the inspiration for the persona for Jimmy Glick primetime Glick
Here, the outcomes were presented in a much more straightforward manner. And this made it harder for the program to stand apart in the already crowded sector of late-night entertainment.
It only had one season of broadcasting, disappointed in the ratings, and never managed to capture the interest of a larger audience. On this night, though, Short made his character debut as Glick, so at least the experiment wasn’t a complete failure!
3. The Wanda Sykes Show(2009)
While some comedians, regrettably, aren’t as fortunate, some are able to seamlessly segue into other media. There is no disputing Wanda Sykes’s humor and magnetism. But these qualities may not translate well to the late-night talk show scene.
It’s strange because Sykes’ frequently obscene and adult-oriented comedy could have been adapted for evening programming. Nevertheless, we believe Sykes might attempt to appeal to the talk show crowd again in the future. Sadly, “The Wanda Sykes Show” only ran for one season in 2009 since it wasn’t the perfect platform for her.
4. Bethenny (2012–2014
The daytime talk program “Bethenny” was an effort by former “Real Housewife” star Bethenny Frankel to succeed. Ellen DeGeneres, by this point, had achieved enormous success with her own daytime talk show brand, produced and co-created the program.
The final product of “Bethenny” only generated roughly 107 episodes, although it did so with respectable ratings. It was clear right on that the show probably wasn’t going to perform “Ellen”-caliber tunes. In the end, “Bethenny” failed to become a breakout hit. It was unable to amass a devoted enough fan base to warrant a second season.
5. The Jay Leno Show (2009–2010)
From Conan O’Brien’s brief reign as host to the experiment that was “The Jay Leno Show,” which aired the same year, Jay Leno’s departure from “The Tonight Show” in 2009 was a bit of a jumble.
Even more perplexing is how much “The Jay Leno Show” resembled Leno’s own “Tonight Show” persona, down to including recurring jokes like “Jaywalking” in the mix. Even more offensive was NBC’s choice to relocate Leno into his former “Tonight Show” time slot, delaying O’Brien in order to make room for the switch. Naturally, the strategy failed, O’Brien was fired, and Jay Leno took over “The Tonight Show” for another four years before Jimmy Fallon took over.
6. The Chevy Chase Show (1993)
One of the worst-performing talk shows in television history, it was withdrawn from the Fox Network after just four weeks, though it continued to air for an additional week after that.
After Johnny Carson left “The Tonight Show,” there was a large void that seemed to be filled by anybody and everyone who wanted to host a talk show. Chevy was a visibly bad host, and his studio audience behaved so badly that it could have been considered a separate character in and of itself. It was regarded as the most embarrassing form of trash-fire entertainment.
7. The Pat Sajak Show (1989–1990)
It’s one of the more well-known talk show bombs on this list of Top 10 shows that collapsed, demonstrating once again that success in the entertainment business isn’t guaranteed. “The Pat Sajak Show” was an attempt by the “Wheel of Fortune” host to leave the game show circuit and enter the wild and woolly world of late-night chat shows after having already had one successful show under his belt.
In order to try this out, Sajak really stepped down from his role as “Wheel” host during the day. The decision was disastrous once “The Pat Sajak Show” was canceled after fewer than 300 episodes. This was brought on by the show’s poor ratings and inability to rival Arsenio Hall and Johnny Carson.
8. Thicke of the Night (1983–1984)
The late-night television powerhouse “The Tonight Show” is a behemoth that frequently makes it tough for rival programs to stand out. One such endeavor was Alan Thicke’s chat show “Thicke of the Night,” which debuted in 1983 and included a catchy theme song.
Some highly gifted comedians with famous faces made appearances, including Richard Belzer and Arsenio Hall. Additionally, Thicke demonstrated that he was a competent interviewer.
However, the combination of musical performances, interviews, and sketch comedy didn’t sit well with the critics of the day. Before it had had a chance to establish its unique voice, “Thicke of the Night” was discontinued.
9. Kris (2013)
The Kardashian Family is famous for having failed on not one, but two separate talk shows. In 2016, “Kocktails with Khloé” failed to impress on a creative level, while the Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner’s own trial run failed in 2013.
The summertime program, simply titled “Kris,” aired for six weeks and ten episodes in the hopes that a full season would be picked up. This did not occur, and on January 17th, 2014, “Kris” was announced. When all the data from Nielsen ratings and audience feedback had been tallied.
10. Busy Tonight (2018–19)
The last on our list of the Top 10 shows that collapsed is Busy Tonight
The Chelsea Handler program “Chelsea Lately” is one of many successful chat shows that have aired on the E! Network. Actress Busy Philipps got her chance in 2018 when E! approved her show, but it didn’t stick around for long.
This occurred in spite of “Busy Tonight” having a stellar guest list, including Kim Kardashian, Julia Roberts, Olivia Munn, and others. Though Philipps was eager to preserve the show by relocating to a different network, it didn’t last a year. However, Philipps’ brand eventually found success on YouTube after that fruitless search.
CONCLUSION
Hosting a talk show takes more than just popularity and fame. this list of Top 10 shows that collapsed shows these talk shows that didn’t stand the test of time on the screens.
