History

On January 26, 2003, the program debuted, taking the place of Politically Incorrect. Following the network’s long-running new show Nightline, ABC had originally planned to offer Jon Stewart his own late-night program, but Jimmy Kimmel was selected. Jimmy Kimmel Live! (and Politically Incorrect before it) previously began beyond midnight because Nightline often aired at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT.

Since reviving The Dick Cavett program in the 1980s, Jimmy Kimmel Live! is ABC’s first effort at a classic late-night talk program. The Les Crane Show was more of a serious interview program than light entertainment. Was an earlier attempt by ABC to directly compete with NBC’s Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the 1960s and 1970s.

After Conan O’Brien and Bill Maher retired from network late-night television in 2015 and February 2014, David Letterman in May 2015, and Jon Stewart in August 2015, Jimmy Kimmel became the host with the third-longest tenure. After Maher, Kimmel is the host with the second-longest tenure after O’Brien’s show concluded in 2021.

Shortly After the March sweeps break, on April 14, 2009, Kimmel started airing in 720p high definition.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fined ABC and the program $395,000 as part of a settlement on August 15, 2019, for improper use of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) tone on the episode from October 3, 2018, which aired.

Kimmel and ABC reached an agreement in May 2019 to extend his hosting duties through the 2022 season of the program.

The show started production again from Kimmel’s home two weeks later, on March 30, and reverted to its former time slot of 12:05 a.m.; Nightline moved to 11:35 p.m. Episodes were shortened to 30 minutes starting on April 13. After the encore of the 11:35 p.m. broadcast, Nightline was rescheduled to 12:05 a.m.

A number of guest hosts filled in for Kimmel with 30-minute programs starting on June 18, 2020, until he returned with the new television season after hosting the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards. The headliners that appeared on that very first edition on January 26, 2003, were the same ones who appeared on the 20th-anniversary show: Coldplay, Snoop Dogg, and George Clooney
