The History of The View

The History of The View: American chat show The View was developed by broadcast journalist Barbara Walters. The program, which is currently in its 26th season, has been a staple of ABC’s daytime television block since August 11, 1997. It has a panel of women from different generations who talk about the “Hot Topics” of the day, like sociopolitical and entertainment news. Here is The History of The View

HISTORY

Star Jones, Debbie Matenopoulos, Barbara Walters, and Meredith Vieira served as the show’s co-hosts at its premiere. Joy Behar soon transitioned into a full-time co-host after initially being announced as a fourth co-host who would occasionally step in when Walters wasn’t available. The five women were the first group to audition for the panel. And according to Behar, they hit it off right away.

Her final episode aired on June 9; Vieira announced her departure from the program in April 2006 to take on the role of co-anchor of the NBC morning program Today. Jones announced her departure on-air that same month but added that she will continue to appear on the program through July.

O’Donnell would be replaced as moderator for season 11 by Whoopi Goldberg, according to a Walters announcement made in August 2007. On September 4, Goldberg made her debut during the season premiere. On September 10, the actress Sherri Shepherd joined as a regular co-host.

DEVELOPMENT

Behar stated in March 2013 that she would be departing the show at the conclusion of season 16. According to reports in the same month, Hasselbeck and Behar were leaving because their respective points of view were seen to be too “polarizing” by the market, although Walters rejected this.

Alongside Goldberg, Raven-Symoné, and Collins, the last of whom left in June 2016. The 19th season saw the return of Behar as well as the inclusion of actress Candace Cameron Bure and broadcast journalist Paula Faris as co-hosts.
Despite her original consideration to step down after season 20, Goldberg stayed on as moderator for season 21, with Behar, Faris, Haines, Hostin, and Bila all coming back as co-hosts. On broadcast, Bila declared her departure from the program on September 18, 2017.

The View was filmed in ABC Television Studio 23 in New York City for its first 17 seasons. The first four seasons’ original set was a piece of the discontinued soap opera The City’s set. Producers can speak with the panelists through IFB earpieces when they are sitting at a table or on a sofa. For 17 years, the show’s creator and director were Mark Gentile and Bill Geddie, Barbara Walters’ longtime producing partner. Up until her passing, Walters continued as an executive producer.

VARIANTS

The View started a podcast in September 2018 that saw the release of each episode following its initial televised broadcast. Behind the Table, a podcast featuring dialogues between previous and present co-hosts debuted in September 2021.

The full history of the program is covered in the nonfiction book Ladies Who Punch by journalist Ramin Setoodeh. Which was released in April 2019 by Thomas Dunne Books. Interviews with numerous current and former View co-hosts are included. The book is going to be made into a miniseries for television.

ESTIMATED ANNUAL PROFIT

A source revealed that while Joy Behar, 79, earns about $7 million annually, “Whoopi Goldberg [66] makes an astonishing $8 million,” in addition to Sunny Hostin, 53, and Sara Haines, 44, who reportedly earns $1.6 million and $1.5 million year each.

The source added that they would “be surprised if Ana Navarro [50] is making much more than $250,000 a year,” which is reportedly what 33-year-old Alyssa Farah Griffin, the newest cohost, is paid. For beginners, the $250k is reasonable.
