History
NBC was founded in 1926 by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), which was originally owned by General Electric (GE), Westinghouse, AT&T Corporation, and United Fruit Company. It was the first and oldest significant broadcast network in the United States. Due to antitrust allegations, GE was forced to sell RCA and NBC in 1932. Through its $6.4 billion purchase of RCA in 1986, GE regained ownership of NBC. Despite keeping NBC, GE promptly closed most of RCA’s divisions.

NBC owns and operates twelve stations and has affiliation agreements with 223 other television stations in 50 states. the District of Columbia, six U.S. possessions, and two non-U.S. territories (Aruba and Bermuda). The network has a countrywide reach of 88.91% of all US households (or 277,821,345 Americans who own at least one television set). NBC has been the only major network with an in-market affiliate in every designated market area in the United States since January 24, 2022, when CBS affiliate WBKB-TV in Alpena, Michigan affiliated its DT2 subchannel with NBC.
Outside of the NBC Owned Television Stations-operated O&O group, Tegna Media is the largest NBC station operator in terms of overall market reach, owning or providing services to 20 NBC affiliates (including those in larger markets like Atlanta, Denver, St. Louis, Seattle, and Cleveland); Gray Television is the largest NBC station operator by numerical total, owning 23 NBC-affiliated stations.
NBC And The Tonight Show
NBC is the home broadcaster of some of the longest-running American television series, including Meet the Press (debuted in 1947), Today (debuted in 1952), The Tonight Show (debuted nationally in 1954), and Saturday Night Live (debuted in 1975). Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which premiered in 1999, will begin its 24th season in September 2022, making it the longest-running live-action series in American prime-time television history.
Programs
NBC will broadcast 87 hours of regularly scheduled network programming per week by 2022. The network provides affiliated stations with 22 hours of prime-time programming. Monday through Saturday, 8:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. Eastern and Pacific Time (7:00 p.m.-o10:00 p.m. in all other time zones in the United States), and Sunday, 7:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. Eastern and Pacific Time (6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. in all other time zones).
Variants
Since the network’s radio days, news coverage has been an integral aspect of its operations and public image. Today, NBC Nightly News (and its immediate predecessor, the Huntley-Brinkley Report). Meet the Press (which has the distinction of being the longest continuously running program in the history of American television), Dateline NBC, Early Today, NBC News at Sunrise, NBC Nightside, and Rock Center with Brian Williams are all notable NBC News productions.
Abut the former CEO
Jeff Shell is an American media executive who was the CEO of NBCUniversal, a Comcast company, from 2019 until 2023.
Shell was fired from NBCUniversal on April 23, 2023. Following an investigation into sexual harassment that began when a female colleague made a complaint against him. From 2012 through 2021, Shell had an adulterous affair with the employee. Who was later revealed as CNBC reporter Hadley Gamble. According to Variety, the legal firm Gibson Dunn was hired to perform the inquiry. And after checking records of Shell and Gamble’s email contacts, they corroborated the complaint. Shell was then fired without cause and received no severance compensation.
Shell was president of FOX Cable Network Group in 2001. Before joining Comcast in 2004 as head of Comcast Programming Group. It was announced in 2019 that he would succeed Steve Burke as CEO of NBCUniversal. Shell took over as CEO of Comcast on January 1, 2020, and reports directly to Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts.
