The history of SNL: The American late-night live television sketch comedy, political satire, and variety program Saturday Night Live (commonly abbreviated as SNL) was founded by Lorne Michaels and developed by Dick Ebersol. HISTORY
Herbert Schlosser, the president of NBC, urged Dick Ebersol, the vice president of late-night programming, to develop a program to fill the Saturday night time slot in 1974. Schlosser and Ebersol then sought Lorne Michaels at Barry Diller’s suggestion, a Paramount Pictures executive. Over the following three weeks, Ebersol and Michaels developed the latter’s notion for a variety show that would appeal to viewers between the ages of 18 and 34 and feature high-concept comic sketches, political satire, and musical performances.
Michaels left the show in 1980 to pursue other options. After a season of unfavorable reviews, he was replaced by Jean Doumanian, who was later replaced by Ebersol. Before Michaels came back in 1985, Ebersol presided over the program. Michaels has been the showrunner ever since. While performing on the show, many SNL cast members became nationally famous and found success in film and television, both in front of and behind the camera. Others connected to the show, such as writers, have gone on to have prosperous careers producing, writing, and starring in television and motion pictures.
After making its debut on October 11, 1975, the program soon gained a cult following. It later achieved mainstream success and, in 1978, gave rise to “Best of Saturday Night Live” compilations that were watched by people who couldn’t stay up for the live broadcasts. However, some NBC officials weren’t happy with the show’s Nielsen ratings and share during the first season in 1975 and 1976. Lorne Michaels drew their attention to the fact that, according to Nielsen’s demographic analysis, the bulk of viewers who did make a commitment to watching the show were baby boomers, many of whom did not watch much other television.

After the program’s premiere, the ratings rose gradually for several seasons before peaking in the fifth season. After then, ratings went into a fall and never recovered to those levels, although by the early 1990s, they had sufficiently improved to make the 1992–1993 season the fifth-highest rated in the show’s history. Ratings have fallen steadily after then. Thirteen of the show’s lowest-rated seasons as of 2018 took place in the 2000s. During U.S. presidential election years, the show’s ratings frequently see brief increases.

Stars of SNL with a lot of experience make about $25,000 for every show. The pay for other cast members ranges from $9,000 to $15,000 per episode, depending on their level of experience. SNL cast members making $25,000 every episode make about $525,000 a year.
At the beginning of the season, an SNL cast member made about $7,000 per episode, and by the end, they were making about $150,000 per season. Up to the second season, the pay per episode was $8,000; at the end of the season, it was over $170,000.
The Saturday Night Live show is already in its fifth season, and they are earning $15k per episode and $315,000 per season. The cast member cannot break the 7-year contract but maybe let go within that time. The well-known Saturday Night Live cast members currently earn $25,000 per episode and $525,000 per year.

Since its inception, Saturday Night Live has received numerous honors, including three Peabody Awards, six Writers Guild of America Awards, and 87 Primetime Emmy Awards.
HOSTS AND ANCHORS
A single host will often appear on each episode of SNL, either because they are well-known or unusual, or because a movie, album, or other piece of media will come out soon after their appearance. In the first episode of SNL in October 1975, comedian George Carlin served as host. Three episodes later, Candice Bergen became the show’s first female host.

CC Lorne Michaels is a Canadian-American television writer and producer (born Lorne David Lipowitz; November 17, 1944). In addition to creating and producing Saturday Night Live (1975–1980, 1985–present). He also produced The Tonight Show (since 2014), and The Late Night series (since 1993). And The Kids in the Hall (1989–1955).
He holds the record for being the person with the most nominations in the history of the award ceremony. With 21 Primetime Emmy Awards from 98 nominations.
Michaels co-created the television program NBC’s Saturday Night in 1975. With fellow NBC employee Dick Ebersol and network president Herb Schlosser. In 1977, the program’s name was changed to Saturday Night Live.
Michaels, who started out as the show’s producer and eventually transitioned to executive producer, also wrote for the program. On occasion, he makes an appearance on television, where he is renowned for his deadpan comedy.
